Snow across Europe
Monday November 23, 2015 - Email this article to a friend

All the focus is on the Alps but 50cm has fallen in the Pyrenees, there is snow in Scandinavia and let us not forget Sierra Nevada in Spain. UPDATED

Much of the attention is on the Alps with heavy snow at the weekend in places and more set to come later this week.

Temperatures remain cold too as we have reported in our main article on PlanetSKI that has all the details from the Alps.

However the people of the Pyrenees have seen good snowfalls too.

La Monjie recieved 40cm at the weekend and it looks rather good at the Pic du Midi observatory above the village.

And in nearby Cauterets it is none too shabby either.

"Cauterets opens this weekend with 50cm at 2400m and we are still expecting some more snow later this week. The resort should be opening with 80% of lifts up and running and Pont d'Espagne cross- country ski area will follow,  opening on Saturday 5th December," said the Tourism Director of Cauterets, Vincent Doutres.

As well as snow falling the temperatures have fallen too - allowing snowmaking to continue.

Here at PlanetSKI we are huge fans of the Pyrenees and believe people overlook the area at their loss.

It has some great mountains, good snow and can be a fraction of the price of the Alps.

We were last there in 2014 at the end of the winter and the previous year we visited in January seeing 5 resorts in 5 days.

And we will be back again this coming season - we are visiting in January and seeing some of the little-known resorts of the area.

In Andorra there has also been some snow too.

15cm in Soldeu & Pas de la Casa with 20cm in Arcalis.

The images below were taken and sent to us by our good friends over at Neilson Holidays.

But the heaviest snowfall is forecast for later in the week - up to 50cm from Wednesday across all the resorts.

And it all looks good in the Spanish Pyrenees too.

Further south in Spain is Sierra Nevada - in fact it is the most southerly resort in mainland Europe.

PlanetSKI will be visiting in January 2016.

At the other ends of Europe there have been decent falls in Norway.

One of our regular readers, Scott Hammond, has been out on is telemark skis and posted the following pictures.

PlanetSKI will be in Trysil, Norway, in early December.

Last winter it has some of the best snow in Europe as we reported here.

And back in the Alps it is looking good in Slovakia too.

And as we are looking away from the Alps, what about North America?

With Thanksgiving this Thursday many resorts will be open and they have some of the best early season conditions in recent years.

And further North in Canada Whistler has opened a week early as we reported here.

El Nino seems to living up to expectation, and if you want an explanation of exactly what El Nino is, and how it may affect the snow this winter, then see our story here.

And it is looking pretty good elsewhere too in Canada.

And for a moment let us go global - snow has been falling in Beijing, home to the 2022 Winter Olympics.

So, it appears it is not just the Alps that is enjoying a taste of winter.

And if you want t check out the resorts of the French Pyrenees then see what is on offer from Pyrenees Collection.

While the UK operator, Erna Low, is offering the area this season for the first time.
