It's been snowing in the Alps
Monday May 23, 2016 - Email this article to a friend

We might be deep into Spring with June approaching but the weather doesn't seem to think so - there is snow across many ski resorts with 50cm falling in places. UPDATED

The last winter ski resort to close in the Alps was Val Thorens in France back at the beginning of the month.

This was the scene in the resort on Monday morning this week - more like the middle of winter.

"Seasons don't count for anything anymore!" said a comment from the resort.

It has been caused by a cold front coming down from the North with some heavy precipitation.

In places up to 50cm of snow has fallen at altitude.

It is good news for the summer glacier ski areas that will see their snow depths boosted - see here for a separte PlanetSKI story as we look at the 5 best resorts for summer skiing.

There is still skiing and snowboarding to be had in Zermatt in Switzerland and Hintertux and Kaprun in Austria.

A quick look at the web cameras in Zermatt and Saas-Fee show scenes more like the middle of winter:

Elsewhere though hikers, climbers, cyclists and many others out in the Alps would rather see sun than snow.

And it is not just a one off.

There was some snow last week too with people skinning up to come down in fresh powder.
