SNOW CENTRE GOES SWISS
Tuesday August 2, 2016 - Email this article to a friend

The indoor slope at Hemel Hempstead is to be sponsored by Switzerland Tourism. There are new murals, joint promotion and trips planned to the Swiss Alps.

The initiative is designed to keep Switzerland firmly in people's eyes as they make their turns.

The walls have been painted with images of the Swiss Alps.

"In order to be front of mind of new skiers, Switzerland wants to be present at their first attempts on the slopes. This is a great way to position Switzerland as early as possible as the ideal ski destination for this new audience," said a statement from Switzerland Tourism.

There are also Swiss scenes at the main desk as people check in and in the restaurant/bar area overlooking the slopes.

"When our visitors hit the slopes, they will be immersed in these exciting new panoramas inside the venue. This is a great way to position Switzerland as early as possible in the skiers journey as an ideal ski destination if they are looking to head out to the slopes. We are excited about this new collaboration with our Swiss partners," said the Manager of the Snow Centre, Ian Brown.

The new design has met with approval by visitors to the Snow Centre.

"I think it looks really good and certainly gives the feel of being out in the Alps," said one visitor to the Snow Centre as we canvassed opinion on a visit last weekend.

'Brilliant, I love it!" said another.

"It makes me want to go to the Alps but I'm not sure about Switzerland as the exchange rate is not so good," added another visitor.

It seems some prefer their ipad to the new decor.

There will be Swiss specialities available in the restaurant.

The Snow Centre ski instructors will take clients on winter trips to the Valais to experience the real winter in the Alps with trips planned to Saas-Fee, Grimentz and Aletsch.

There will be five of these trips organised each winter season.

Saas-Fee from 19th - 23rd October and a Ladies Only Trip from 23rd - 27th November.

In January there is a trip to the Aletsch Arena from 11th - 15th January 2017 in Fiescheralp and a week in Grimentz from 11th - 18th March 2017.

Then it back to Saas-Fee from 19th - 23rd April 2017 for an end of season trip.

The Snow Centre opened back in 2009 and PlanetSKI was there as the ribbon was cut by the former British ski racer, Alain Baxter.

It cost £23m and is on the site of the old Hemel Hempstead Ski Centre to the north of London.  It has 2 drag lifts, a main slope of 160m and a special slope for lessons that is 100m long.

We were there again last month - see here for what the experience is like.

The Snow Centre used to be sponsored by the Oetztal Vallley in the Tirol in Austria. The new deal will last for 3 years.
