Exeter University Snowsports club stages first freestyle rail competition on site in Exeter, and on real snow. NEW

Exeter University snowsports club has hosted a freestyle competition at its University campus, staging the first University event of its kind.

They brought a mountain of snow to the University campus.

To be precise, 48 tons of snow (that's 3 lorry loads) was shipped in from Milton Keynes Snowdome to create a ski slope.

For those not in the know the University campus is very hilly, and one of the hills was remodelled to take on the look of a ski slope and christened "Chill Hill" for the day.

The event took place on Saturday and drew quite a crowd.

It took a year of planning.

30 riders were invited to participate from the Universities of Exeter, Plymouth and Bristol's University of West England (UWE), to compete for the Freestyle Rail Competition.

The spectacle was set up as a taster to introduce new members to the sport.

The snowsports club is attempting to raise the profile of snowsports among fellow students and decided to take action and bring some shredding to life on campus hoping the event may entice more students to sign up.

One of the spectators going on the next Uni ski trip to Val d'Isere, told PlanetSKI, "It was really cool. No-one has ever done anything like this before. Its great Exeter Uni is the first to stage an event like this, I hope we do it again next year and maybe I'll join in too! But I can't wait to get on real snow again."
