Magical Montreux

The town has the biggest Christmas market in Switzerland and is quite a sight. Take a look at the video we've made.

The market is famous the length and breadth of Switzerland and people come from as far afield as Italy to buy a few presents, soak up the atmosphere and generally get in the mood for Christmas.

Many resort workers too head down to do something different for a day.

One planetSKI reader, Heather Jefferies, who was taking the train back to Geneva after a holiday in the Alps this week  jumped off the train for a couple of hours just to wander round and soak up the atmosphere of this famous Swiss Christmas market.

"I must admit I wasn't taken with the stalls as there wasn't much to buy, but the food and drinks were great and the setting, on the shores of Lake Geneva, was absolutely stunning.  It was well worth a visit.".

It has been going for 14 years now and around 250,000 people visit it each year.

montmkt_pic_400There are over 150 chalet style stalls down on the lakeside selling everything from christmas decorations, to food & drink and local specialities.

There are clothes, jewellery and any number of stocking fillers.

Our content editor, James Cove, who is not a big fan of Christmas was rather taken with the place.

Certainly something different to do in the mountains.
