NEW INVESTMENT FOR FRENCH PYRENEES
Sunday March 19, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

Luz and Cauterets are set to link up with further improvements at Barèges and La Mongie. NEW

Plans for a new cable car link between Cauterets and Luz Saint-Sauveur are on track for a 2019/2020 completion.

The cable car, from Cauterets village to the higher slopes of Luz Ardiden, will create 100 km of linked pistes.

Skiers staying in Cauterets can choose between two ski slopes (and more with Pont d'Espagne), almost 40kms in Cirque du Lys and 60kms with Luz Ardiden.

Cauterets currently has 320,000 skier days per season (25;000 beds) and has a small ski area with 36km of piste.

Luz has 70,000 skier days with a 65km ski area (10,000 beds).

PlanetSKI last visited Cauterets in 2014 - see here for our report from the time.

In the past two years Cauterets has invested €2.5m to improve its ski area.

A new magic carpet has been added this season in the Yéti Park at a cost of €500,000.

The Lys Café was also refurbished this season, costing €700,000 and a  €1.3m eatery, the Lys Restaurant, opened last winter.

A new 'mum's package' has also been introduced, where for €36 they get a day ski pass, and two hours' spa time, while 3-7 year old children get a half day in the crèche.

Project Tourmalet 360

Nearby Barèges and La Mongie have a seven-year project to modernise their ski areas, which started last year.

This season has seen a €12m investment to improve the 11km link between Barèges and La Mongie, with high-speed-quad chairlifts installed for the start of the season.

- Sapins, the first four-seater chair lift replaces the old "Pain de sucre" drag lift with increased safety features.

- There are also new beginner ski sections above La Mongie village and a new sledging run down to La Mongie.

- The second new high-speed quad - La Piquette, on the Barèges side runs from the Lienz area and replaces the old double chairlift.

- The Piquette blue run, a 2.5km blue run which comes down from La Piquette chair is now completely remodelled, with 21 snow cannons added.

In total five pistes in the area have been improved and the blue Panoramic run widened over its entire length.

The six-person chairlifts l'Espade and Tourmalet are 25% faster.

The region has introduced more online purchase and package options for holidaymakers, 3d piste maps and hi-speed WiFi across most of the slopes.

This is a joint investment across the seven ski resorts of Cauterets, Le Grand Tourmalet, Luz Ardiden, Peyragudes, Saint-Lary et Piau Engaly and Val Louron, which each have WiFi hot spots

Luz Ardiden

Luz now offers its shuttle bus service for free, connecting the village to the slopes 14kms away.

The beginners' area now has a new picnic zone and play area with small jumps, and a new shop at the base of the ski area.
