New airline Powdair has confirmed that it will be running six routes from the UK to Sion airport in the Valais region of Switzerland next ski season.

The first flights will take off on December 14th from six UK airports as well as one in Belgium and one in Germany.

They will operate six days a week.

The flights will take between 1 hr 25 mins and 2 hrs with prices averaging £140 each way including ski carriage.

They will significantly cut the transfer times to some of Switzerland's most popular ski resorts such as Saas-Fee, Verbier, Zermatt, Crans-Montana, Zinal-Grimentz, Leukerbad and Anzère.

Driving between Sion and Verbier takes less than half the time it does from Geneva to Verbier.

The eight airports that will be served by Powdair are Luton, Southend, Southampton, Bristol, Manchester and Edinburgh, as well as Deurne (Antwerp) in Belgium and Hamburg in Germany.

PlanetSKI reported on the new service in February when the idea was for the airline to operate from eight UK airports.

Powdair has now dropped Liverpool, Leeds-Bradford and Newcastle airports from its original plan but added Luton.

It has also revised the airports it will use on mainland Europe.

The company's head of Marketing and Customer Experience, Zoë Ombler, said the final decision on routes came after consultation between the management team and by popular demand from its market research.

"We strongly believe that these airports are best placed to help skiers and snowboarders reach some of the best resorts in the Alps that have been traditionally harder to get to," she said.

"It's an exciting time for us and for anyone wishing to travel to the Valais region faster and more efficiently this winter and beyond."

Swiss International Airlines has also announced that it will again run once-a-week Heathrow to Sion flights for three weeks in February 2018 over the popular school half-term period, following a successful trial this year.
