An investigation is underway after a blaze destroyed the building in the Swiss ski resort. No-one was injured and fire fighters have been at the scene over the weekend. UPDATED

The blaze broke out at 13.30 local time on Friday and one of our readers, Guy Ordway, sent us the image below as the fire took hold.

"The whole Sports Center has caught fire and there have been a series of massive explosions," he said to PlanetSKI.

The Sports Centre had been undergoing extensive renovations and the explosions were caused by gas cyclinders at the site.

People were evacuated from nearby homes and people in the resort were warned to stay indoors with their windows closed and keep away from the area.

Dozens of fire fighters from four areas were called in and they brought the blaze under control.

Some stayed overnight to continue damping down.

The whole of the main building has been destroyed with thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

"There are no injuries," said the President of the local commune, Eloi Rossier.

Verbier resident, Robin Quarrelle witnessed the fire taking hold of the Sports Centre and forwarded us the video below.

The videos below were posted on Facebook.
