COURCHEVEL RED BULL 400 - Kisia Cove, PlanetSKI
Tuesday June 13, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

Racing up a steep ski jump slope is probably one of the madder summer sports that is gripping venues in the mountains.

One of the world's steepest races has just taken place in Courchevel.

It included 400 athletes.

It covered a distance of 400m and involved a very, very steep140m climb.

The Red Bull 400 has been taking place for seven years and, on Saturday 10th June, it returned to the Olympic ski jump in Courchevel, in the Savoie region of France.

It is an extraordinary feat demanding a high standard of physical fitness and sheer determination.

The idea of the race is to run "up" a steep slope used for ski-jumping, and then to finish at the top of the ski-jump ramp that is the platform used to initiate the ski jump.

So it is running up the ramp the wrong way!

400 participants take part in a series of heats for men and women, that then end in a men's and women's final.

They face the slope that becomes progressively steeper from the bottom part where the ski jumpers usually land their jump, and they race up to the top of the ramp... collapsing at the top in an exhausted heap.

In the men's competition this year the winner was Thibaut Baronian who reached the top in just 03:27.41 minutes.

Watch Thibaut Baronian storm in first to the finish in the video below.
