Pete Sonntag appointed after Vail Resorts takes over. So, what's in his in-tray to keep it the most popular resort in North America? NEW

It was sold for £1bn back in August last year as we reported at the time: Change at the top was always going to happen and Whistler's longtime employee and chief operating officer, Dave Brownlie, has left after nearly 30-years working at the resort.

He helped it become a world class resort and the biggest and most popular in North America.

His legacy is made.

PlanetSKI's Katie Bamber was in Whistler last February.
So, who is Pete Sonntag?

He is the current senior vice president of Vail Resort's Lake Tahoe region.

He was the chief operating officer of Heavenly Mountain Resort with oversight of Northstar California and Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

PlanetSKI skied all 3 resorts back in 2012.

Prior to that Paul Sonntag was director of the Vail Mountain Ski & Snowboard School - the world's largest ski and snowboard school.

From 2007-09 he was director of the Ski & Snowboard School for Beaver Creek Resort and from 2005-07, director of skier services at Keystone Resort.

Sonntag began his ski career as an instructor for the Beaver Creek Ski & Snowboard School and in the summer worked as a greens keeper at the Beaver Creek Golf Club.

He has worked his way up the greasy pole.

He will have much on his plate at the Canadian resort.

"Dave Brownlie will be a very hard act to follow as he has helped make Whistler the resort every other one in North America looks to. It may not be to everyone's tatse as it is homogonised and highly commercial, but it is a very succesful product in both summer and winter," said the PlanetSKI editor, James Cove.

"It is no surprise it is the most popular resort for British skiers and snowboarders and it is a global player. Pete will have to build on that and take it to the next level and that is no small challenge," James added.

In the last few days there has been bad news for Whistler:

And Aspen has moved up a gear by purchasing a number of resorts to take on the might of Vail Resorts in a huge move:

Pete Sonntag starts his latest challenge at Whistler this summer.

Once his Canadian work visa is approved.
