BUY A BIT OF A SKI MOUNTAIN
Thursday August 17, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

Sales have opened for fans of the oldest resort in Western Canada to buy up a piece of their favourite resort, Red Mountain.

RED Mountain in Rossland, British Columbia, is offering people the chance to invest as part of a novel way of stopping the ski area falling into the hands of big business.

Just over a year ago, RED launched a crowdfunding campaign, asking for pledges of $1,000 upwards to protect what it called an "endangered species" - the independent resorts faced with hostile buyouts by big corporations.

It was the first time a for-profit ski resort had opened up equity through internet crowdfunding and those behind it weren't sure what to expect.

The target of the first phase of the Fight the Man.

Own the Mountain campaign was $10 million but it surpassed its goal, bringing in expressions of interest totalling $12.2 million.

Now it's time for RED's supporters to make good on their promises.

This week the crowdfunding went live.

Only Canadians are currently able to buy up parts of the resort but the process will be opened up to US citizens in November.

RED says it's had interest from as far away as Scotland and Switzerland and is looking at the possibility of opening up equity to the international market.

So, what is Red Mountain like?

PlanetSKI's editor, James Cove, visited in 2016 on an RV trip round some of British Columbia's finest ski resorts.

It was perhaps his favourite one.

"We planted our flag on this issue just as some of North America's most famous resorts were amalgamated," explains RED CEO, Howard Katkov.

"People were very passionate about keeping RED out of harm's way. And, within a month, we had surpassed our wildest dreams on the crowdfunding front.

"I just hope everyone in Canada will recognize that now is the time to make good on those pledges and invest real dollars, for real equity, in a resort that's about as real as it gets."

The rewards for investing depend on the amount of money paid.

They include lift tickets, custom skis or snowboards, season and family passes and access to a purpose-built clubhouse and overnight cabins.

"It's showtime, and we're both excited and a little nervous at the same time," says Katkov.

"The success of the campaign thus far has been an incredible reminder of the passion that the snowsports community really runs on.

"I think a lot of us in the industry lose sight of this passion from time to time. Fight the Man. Own the Mountain has become emblematic of the fight for independence in skiing all over the world.

"Even people who have never skied here are sending me emails from Scotland and Switzerland asking how they can invest just because they like what we're up to here.

"This means the world to us. It really does. I can't think of any sport where the passion runs this deep or crosses borders and languages so effortlessly."
