The Lonely Planet guide says it could be friendliest nation on earth and Snoworks is hitting the backcountry. NEW

What - the place US President Donald Trump says sponsors terrorism and is run by a fanatical regime?

Yes, that one.

And by all accounts the situation on the ground - and the snow - is far better than you might imagine.

Those who've been say visitors are warmly welcomed and the skiing is exceptional, though the infrastructure is less developed than in the Alps.

Ski Iran is a new offering from Snoworks.

"Skiing in Iran offers a true adventure, combining amazing culture and unforgettable skiing experiences," Phil Smith, Director of Snoworks Courses says.

" We'll be flying into Tehran with a city stopover before heading high up into the Alborz Mountain Range north of Tehran.

"Skiing in Iran is little known outside of the country, but there's an immense mountain range, largely untapped.

"The off-piste will be mostly lift accessed with the use of skins when access to further off-piste is needed".

The trip, departing on 10th March, is being organised in partnership with the chalet company Mountain Heaven whose Managing Director Nick Williams will also travel to Iran with his own group the same week.

The huge Alborz mountain is high - very high.

The highest mountain in the area is Mount Damavand reaching a height of 5,610m.

The off-piste adventure will begin with a full day and overnight in the capital, Tehran, before heading north into the central Alborz mountain range.

It will visit four ski resorts - Dizin, Shemshak, Darbandsar and Tochal - and involve six full days off-piste.

The resorts are all above 2,000m with skiing up to 3,600m or higher.

The predominantly dry air is said to provide light dry powdery snow.

The trip will be hosted by a Snoworks instructor in conjunction with a Mountain Heaven representative.

The trip is open to competent off-piste skiers, Snoworks Level 5 upwards.

Ski touring equipment is required. This can be organized with Snoworks.

Some touring experience is necessary but if you have not ski toured before this can be learned on a Snoworks Backcountry Access Course prior to this trip.

The off-piste will be served by lifts combined with the use of touring skis and skins when needed.

Ski Iran will be open to a maximum of 12 skiers.

The course costs £2,545 (based on sharing a twin room).

Flights, visas and some other costs are not included.

More information and the the full itinerary is on the Snoworks website.
