NORTH AMERICA OPENS FOR SKIING - Katie Bamber, Senior News Reporter
Monday November 13, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

The snow is good in North America but unseasonally high temperatures are plaguing some areas. PlanetSKI reports from the USA & CANADA. UPDATED

While many resort opened for the winter season on Thursday on Thanksgiving and Friday, it doesn't look good everywhere.

It doesn't seem to be cold enough in many places.

Utah's Snowbird opened on Thursday but unfortunately yesterday called a delay in operations due to the unseasonably warm weather.

Nextdoor in the state of Idaho, warm weather is threatening ski resorts too.

The snow has been softer than hoped for the season's opening in Sun Valley.

Everyone is in need of colder temperatures so the season can really get started come December.

It's two days 'til Jackson Hole in Wyoming opens.

That's a day earlier than expected.

A very happy Friday it'll be...

After lots of early snow - a reported 2.5m - the mountain has been made safe.

It's ready and 'looking prime'.

Here's from the weekend:

Up in nearby Grand Targhee, the resort enjoyed its opening day on Friday, 17th November.

And it was a powder day:

Utah's ski season opens with Brighton yesterday, 21st November.

Snowbird opens today - check back for how it looks - with Utah's Park City to open partially tomorrow on Thanksgiving with more lifts running Friday.

In the northwest of the USA the season has been gearing up towards Thanksgiving on 23rd November.

Sun Valley in Idaho had over 15cm of snow over the weekend.

It sits at around 2,500m.

PlanetSKI managed some touring at the start of the weekend on the ski hill, Bald Mountain, and up at Galena Summit.

The cannons have been on for some weeks and the piste bashers have been at work.

But warmer, wet weather is threatening mid-week, ready for the resort's opening on Thursday.

And over in Canada...

It seems there's been a bit more snow in Banff.

We reported on the snow in Whistler earlier - see our report lower down this article.

Here is what it looks like in Lake Louise, Banff from local photographer, Chris Lamothe.

"We had 27 cm of snow yesterday and  the snow was incredible, no one was up there and it's been pretty warm for the time of year sitting around -5c," said PlanetSKI reporter Alex Cove from Sunshine Village.

"Last winter was a very good one and it seems this one has started off on the same note."

There have been huge amounts of snow across Canada and the USA.

The PlanetsKI editor, James Cove, is on his way to Mammoth in California.

A storm has been raging but it is set to clear just as he arrives.

"I must admit a few days ago I was feeling I might be going to the wrong place to start my winter season with all the snow falling in the Alps.  Not any more!" said James.

James has been spending a few days in Los Angeles ahead of his visit to Mammoth.

And across the border in Canada Whistler has opened early with its first lifts turning on Friday 17th.

Almost 2m (198cms to be precise) of snow has fallen in the last week.

Another storm cycle is expected to arrive on Saturday, with another 35cms - 50cms centimetres of snow forecast by Monday morning.

The these lucky local riders were snapped in the powder by the photographer, Paul Morrison.

"We've been expecting a great start to the season," a walker and Ketchum local said on Monday 13th.

"Last season was an incredible one, snow speaking, and it's assumed we'll have the same again this year.

"Warm and wet.

"It's slack season right now but soon everybody'll head back to town.

"There's a little over a week to go until the lifts run and it all gets going."

On the day it'll be fancy dress and meeting up with old winter friends on the mountain in Sun Valley.

Mammoth Mountain's season in California is underway and the lifts have been turning since 9th November.

The PlanetSKI editor James Cove is visiting this coming weekend.

"It will be my first ski of the season and what a place to start!"

Utah's ski fans are still waiting for their resorts to open.

Park City is set to open on 23rd November and Ski Magazine's top rated US resort, Deer Valley, will run its lifts from 2nd December.
