What first comes to mind when you think of the Austrian hub of Innsbruck? NEW

A most picturesque Tirolean city with endless Christmas markets?

The mix of modern and gothic architechture?

Or for being a long-standing centre for winter sports?

There are nine ski regions around Innsbruck, so there's endless skiing fun.

But with the city and culture so close to the mountain resorts, why not combine the two in an ultimate winter trip?

The ski areas are all within 30-minute drives from the city.

More details on each ski area can be found on Innsbruck's Website - The ski areas are:  -

Ski like an Olympian:

Heroes have made history here in Patscherkofel and Axamer Lizum.

Patscherkofel is located 1,400m above the city.

Austrian ski hero Franz Klammer won the most famous race of all time here and you can ski the Olympic Downhill yourself.

Franz Klammer in 1976:

Make your pilgrimage, if you dare...

And a day ski pass costs just €36.

Axamer Lizum is 20km from Innsbruck and its pistes were used for the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics.

Innbruck's architecture & museums:

The Hasburg Empire left Austria with a wealth of impressive architecture and there's a rich imperial history in the city of Innsbruck.

There's the gothic castle, the Imperial Palace with its golden roof.

Or what about the extensive art collection at the Ferdinandeum.

The Imperial historic monuments in the Hofkirche on the edge of the historic district has 40 bronze statues commissioned for Emperor Maximilian I on his death in 1519.

If you want an all-about-skiing winter holiday this year and less urban time, check out these lesser known Tirolean ski resorts:

Music and mountain air at the Air+Style Festival.

This festival started in Innsbruck in 1994 and showcases freestyle skiers and snowboarders competitions.

Good music sets the atmosphere for snowboarding huge tricks, big air and dramatic mountain scenery.

Last year's final: These guys can fly!

We all know what to do with food on holiday... Fit activities around it.

So here are a few suggestions to indulge in the Tirolean cuisine:

Das Schindler has cityscape panoramas with local dishes on the menu.

Then there's the Europa Stuberl for more traditional dining at the Grand Hotel Europa.

Alfred Miller's Schoeneck serves local and international fusion food and is a local favourite.

Sitzwohl offers trendy, contemporary cuisine and has a vibrant urban atmosphere.

There are endless options, and Austria has to offer some of the best winter food out there.
